NHL Playoffs vs NFL Draft

I love football, but nothing is more boring than the NFL draft.

ESPN is running the first couple of rounds from 4:00 to 9:00 tomorrow with ESPN2 picking up the coverage from 9 to 11; if that's not enough for the NFL enthusiasts, ESPN will be running Day 2 coverage from 10:00 to 6:00 on Sunday.

Hooray. Cue the eye roll.

Don't watch the NFL Draft.

Here's your day in hockey:

3:00 PM ET - Philadelphia vs Pittsburgh - Game 6 - NBC (Pitt leads 3-2)

We've got the Battle of Pennsylvania, not to mention what has probably been the most physical series of the first round. Flyer fans hate Crosby. Penguin fans hate Richards. Everyone hates Sean Avery - but that's not important. It's going to be an exciting game, and anyone who chooses to watch Matt Stafford become the #1 pick instead of Evgeni Malkin is a joke.

Huge break - hopefully this one goes to 5 OTs.

9:00 PM ET -
Calgary vs Chicago - Game 5 (Series tied 2-2)

I 'm pretty sure this game isn't on national TV, but if you have Versus, it's worth watching. It feels like we haven't watched a Chicago home playoff game in years.

10 PM ET - Anaheim vs San Jose - Game 6 - Versus (Ducks lead 3-1)

In the shocker (or maybe not) of the first round, the Ducks look to extend what appears to be a cursed Sharks team. Joe Thornton is a good player, but he will NEVER be great until leads his team deep into the playoffs.

No Cup for Roenick.

It's the NFL Draft vs the NHL Playoffs.
Choose wisely.

Jay Feaster Would Be A Breath Of Fresh Air

Adrian Dater's recent blog about Jay Feaster possibly being interested in Colorado's vacant GM spot got me really excited.

Per Dater,

Just got off the phone with Jay Feaster, the former G.M. of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
He has contacted Pierre Lacroix and told him of his great interest in the vacant Avs G.M. job. Feaster has a connection to the Avalanche - he was the G.M. of the Hershey Bears when the Bears were an Avs affiliate. Pierre basically hired him for that job, and played a role in helping him get the G.M. job in Tampa.

The one thing that has constantly driven me (as well as many other Avalanche fans) crazy is the amount of secrecy that goes on between the organization's heavyweights.

Sure, it was fun to be surprised with a big name every trade deadline without so much of a whisper beforehand, but it's getting to the point where Avalanche fans need something more than a "No Comment."

Hiring Feaster would be a huge step in the right direction.

Feaster's blog on The Hockey News is extremely candid, not to mention interesting.

Public relations aside, Feaster has the credentials. He won the 2004 Stanley Cup when he was GM of the Lightning, and in case you haven't noticed, Tampa Bay has been drowning since they let him go.

The Minnesota Wild GM vacancy is open as well. Lets snatch Feaster up while he's interested.

STANLEY CUP:

Wings vs Devils
Wings in 6

All Detroit needs is the goaltending to hold up. Ty Conklin always finds himself in the Winter Classic and Stanley Cup. I hope I'm wrong.

The Devils have a rested Brodeur and their best offense since the 2000-2001 season.

I suck at these prediction things, so it's almost 100% certain that the Devils and Wings will not make the Cup.

And I realize I have barely any upsets. I used NCAA Basketball as my justification.

Happy Playoffs.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly ['08-'09 Avalanche Edition]

It was the worst season in Avalanche history. It was almost horrifying to watch the 2008-2009 Avalanche at most points during the season. These thoughts are in no order whatsoever. With that...

The Good

Not much.

Chris Stewart ended up having a decent rookie campaign. In 53 games, the future power foraward had 11 goals and 19 points.

Wojtek Wolski finally decided to play with some energy after being moved to center in the middle of the season. He is also the shootout King.

Andrew Raycroft was 7-0 a million years ago. Turns out he would go 5-16 after that streak.

TJ Galiardi was somewhat impressive over the last 11 games. 3 goals and 1 assist on the only NHL team not to register 200 goals for the season.

Cody Mcleod, the fourth line grinder, became the team's third best goal scorer. McLeod's 15 goals shocked all of us.

Ian Laperriere played Game #1,000. Lappy was also even in +/- in 74 games. Please sign him.

Ryan Smyth and Milan Hejduk scored goal #300 on the same night.

Francois Giguere was fired as Avalanche GM.

The Bad

Peter Budaj was NOT the #1 goaltender we wanted. A sub-.900 SV% sucks.

The ten Monsters who made their NHL debuts in the last few games failed to impress anyone other than their grandpas. (Note: Chris Chelios was NOT impressed)

Ben Guite was the team leader in +/-. He put up a grand +2 in 50 games.

TJ Hensick's shooting percentage = 3.4%.

Milan Hejduk was the only Av to play 82 games.

Scott Hannan played 81.

No Av scored a hat trick this year.

The Ugly

Darcy Tucker

Tyler Arnason: Goals = 5 , Dazed Looks = 853,431,032,002

Paul Stastny, aka THE FUTURE played just 45 games after another bad injury. Uh-oh.

Joe Sakic + Snowblower = Crap. Farewell, Super Joe.

Francois Giguere did absolutely nothing to shake the team up during the season. We should fire him.

Marek Svatos scored just 14 goals. It's time to move on. I don't want him on my second line anyway.

David Jones had the potential to put up 30 goals and 60 points. He put up 8 and 13.
Per Ledin dropped off the face of the Earth. Don't worry, they found him in time to screw up the chances of drafting Victor Hedman.

32-45-5

Sub-80% on the penalty kill. Crap. Maybe they should block more shots.

1-8-4 in the last 13 games. It was a fun stretch.

16 goals in those 13 games.

Record against the Red Wings: 3-1

Record against the Islanders and Coyotes: 1-3

The defense? What was supposed to be a strength turned out to be a burden. They were awful. JML was slightly less than awful, but Daniel Tjarnqvist was really the MVP.

Jordan Leopold was finally played well and staying healthy. He was traded.

Typical First PP Unit: Tucker, Arnason, Svatos, Clark, Salei. Excellent. Way to reward those who are "trying."

No playoffs.

No Cup.

Long Summer.

Season Over. Draft Lottery Tomorrow.

The Avs finished the season yesterday with a 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues. They fought hard all game but typical of this season, it just wasn't enough.

Draft lottery tomorrow, along with the Good, Bad, and Ugly post for the 2008-2009 crapfest.

Wait, what's this?

Giguere Fired.

Bam. Awesome start to the offseason.

The Future: Shattenkirk to Cohen

BU scores two goals with under a minute to go. The Frozen Four Final heads to OT.

Over ten minutes in, Kevin Shattenkirk passes the puck to Colby Cohen who ends up scoring the winning goal.

BU wins. Two future Avs make it happen.

Tremendous.

It Took Them Long Enough

Most of us thought that Per Ledin would be with the Avs from day 1.

Apparently not.

He finally gets his chance in game 80.

Lets see if he does anything else to screw up the Hedman race.

Never Did Winning Feel So Wrong

If the Avs played in October like they played last night, we'd be talking about whether or not we'd prefer the fifth seed or the sixth seed in the playoffs.

Instead, it's the harsh reality to admit that the Avs are in a race for the #1 or #2 pick in the 2009 draft.

With a big (or small) two points last night, this is how the Tavares/Hedman standings currently stand:

3. Colorado - 66 P, 4 GR, 32 W

2. Tampa Bay - 66 P, 3 GR, 24 W

1. New York Islanders - 61 P, 4 GR, 26 W

Wins are the first tiebreaker, so if Colorado and Tampa finish the season with the same amount of points, Tampa Bay has a better chance in the draft lottery.

Though it is unlikely the Avs will be able to catch the Islanders (the Isles play their last first games against playoff teams), finishing 29th overall compared to 28th overall will be huge come June.

It sucks rooting for your favorite team not to perform.

We'll worry about that after Victor Hedman is the newest Avalanche defenseman.

New Word for 2008-2009 Season

C O M I C A L

You come home, you read the stories posted above and you just laugh - LAUGH.

I love hockey. I hate when the Avalanche season ends because it means another 4-5 months before there is another game I really care about.

But please, let this season die. It needs to be over.

'09 draft.

Please.
